Bob The Cyber-Guy’s Wi-Fi Calling Safety Tip
Wi-Fi Calling is one of those quiet helpers that you don’t notice…
until the cell network goes down and your phone still works.
That happened to me during a recent Verizon outage.
Wi-Fi Calling kicked in automatically, and I never missed a call.
But there’s an important safety detail most people don’t know — especially when it comes to calling 911.
🚨 Why This Tip Matters
When you call 911 over a cell tower, your location can usually be found automatically.
When you call 911 using Wi-Fi Calling, your phone is using the internet — not cell towers.
That means 911 depends on the emergency address you entered in your phone.
No address, wrong address, or an old address?
👉 Emergency services may not know where to send help.
The good news?
Fixing this is easy — and you only need to do it once.- Unless you move!
✅ Bob’s Step-by-Step Wi-Fi Calling Emergency Address Check
(Simple enough for anyone to follow)
Step 1
Open your Settings app ⚙️
(That little gear icon.)
Step 2
Tap Network & internet
Step 3
Tap SIMs
(It may simply say Verizon.)
Step 4
Tap Wi-Fi Calling
Step 5
Look for Emergency Address or Update Current Emergency Address
Tap it.
📝 What Happens Next (This Part Is Important)
A page will open that looks like a form.
If it shows your current home address
✔ You’re all set
✔ You can close the page
✔ Nothing more to do
If it shows an old address — or is blank
❗ Delete the old information
❗ Type in your current home address
❗ Tap Save
That’s it. You’re done.
🔁 One Quick Reminder from Bob
If you:
-
Move
-
Spend long periods at another location
-
Change where you normally use Wi-Fi Calling
👉 Come back and update this address.
Wi-Fi Calling doesn’t automatically know you moved.
💡 Bob’s Bottom Line
Wi-Fi Calling is a fantastic backup when cell networks fail.
It worked perfectly during a Verizon outage.
But 911 can only help if it knows where you are.
✔ Wi-Fi Calling ON
✔ Emergency address correct
✔ Peace of mind restored
Technology does its job best when we finish the setup.
Stay safe, stay prepared, and stay curious.
I used both Gemini and ChatGPT as an aid in putting this together - The step by step instructions came from Gemini. I followed them to check my own settings on my Pixel 10 Phone. The rest of this info came from ChatGPT
